IgA Nephropathy Diet Guidance
IgA nephropathy is an auto-immune kidney disease and it has much to do with our body’s immune system and immune functions. What we eat and drink also has much to do with our physical health and immune system. Proper diets can help ease symptoms, control illness progression, reduce burdens to the already impaired kidneys and preserve residual kidney functions.
Here is the general guidance of proper diets for IgA nephropathy patients.
The diet should be light, low-salt, low-fat, low-phosphorus with moderate lean proteins.
Low-salt. IgA nephropathy can cause high blood pressure which will in turn worsen renal damages. Well control of high blood pressure can help reduce proteinuria and hematuria and significantly slow down illness progression. Besides taking high blood pressure medicines, a low-salt diet can help control high blood pressure.
Low-fat. Fatty foods can cause high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol which can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. Have less or no animal offals, use plant oils to replace animal oils while cooking dishes. Have more fresh vegetables and fruits which contain rich vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Some fresh vegetables and fruits can also help ease hematuria.
Low-phosphorus. IgA nephropathy patients can have high phosphorus in their blood especially when renal functions are affected, therefore a low-phosphorus diet is necessary.
Moderate proteins. Protein intake should be controlled because too much protein intake can increase the production of nitrogenous wastes and increase burdens to the kidneys. High-quality proteins such as milk, fresh water fish are good choices because they contain more essential amino acids and produce less wastes after being absorbed by the body.
Avoid alcoholic drinks. It is better than alcoholic drinks, spicy and stimulating foods should be avoided by IgA nephropathy patients.
