IgA Nephropathy Is An Autoimmune Disease
IgA Nephropathy is an illness condition marked by deposition (mainly IgA immune complexes) in mesangial area. IgA is the abbreviation of Immunoglobulin A which is an antibody that plays a critical role in mucosal immunity. When immune system becomes defective, lots of IgA are produced. They combine with antigen and form IgA immune complexes which deposit in mesangial area and cause IgA Nephropathy. Occurrence of IgA Nephropathy is closely related with defective immune system, so it is an autoimmune disease.
We human being can live normally without being affected by surrounding bacterium and viruses owing to our strong immune system which is a complex system that can keep our body healthy. When this system is broken, our immunity to harmful substances which are clinically called antigen will be decreased greatly. With poor immunity, antigen invade our easily. When they get into our body, antibody will be produced to fight against them. For people with IgA Nephropathy, IgA immune complex is the combination of antigen and IgA antibody. When large amounts of IgA immune complexes deposit in mesangial area, inflammation will occur to remove them. Inflammation is helpful for removing IgA deposition, and meanwhile it damages surrounding kidney tissues. When glomerular filtration membrane which has filtration function, protein and blood leak out and thus form proteinuria and hematuria.
For people with IgA Nephropathy, without timely and effective treatment, more and more antigen invade their body and combine with IgA antibody. Consequently, more and more IgA immune complexes are formed and deposit in kidney. Under such a condition, inflammation and kidney damages become more and more serious and IgA Nephropathy progresses.
IgA Nephropathy is an autoimmune disease, so the key point to treat IgA Nephropathy is to normalize immune system and remove IgA immune complexes in mesangial area. When immune system becomes normal, no IgA immune complexes will be formed and on the precondition of this, if we can clear IgA immune complexes away from mesangial area, no inflammation will occur and also no further kidney damages will be caused. As long as no further kidney damages are caused, IgA Nephropathy stops progressing. In this light, it is very possible for IgA Nephropathy patients with early stage illness condition to avoid End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
