Anemia in Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

2013-01-09 11:55

anemiaAnemia can occur at every stage of chronic renal failure and cause general ill feeling, fatigue, dizziness, paleness, shortness of breath, etc.

To alleviate these symptoms and treat anemia, we need first know why renal failure causes anemia so as to have more targeted and proper measures to rectify it.

The common causes of renal anemia in kidney failure are:

Reduced secretion of erythropoietin

Inhibition of bone marrow

Iron dynamic obstacle

Lack of folic acid

Shortened life span of red blood cells

Bleeding tendency

Different from common anemia, blood transfusion is not very proper for renal anemia due to renal failure except that hemoglobin is lower than 50g/L when there is life risk without blood transfusion. Due to excessive metabolic wastes and toxins in renal failure patients’ body, the transfused red blood cells will experience constant aging and death which can not alleviate anemia. And what is worse, the dead red blood cells will produce large amount of nitrogenous wastes in short time and add much burdens and strains to the kidneys.

That does not to say renal anemia patients can not receive blood transfusion. They can, only if their internal environment needs to be first cleared so as to improve life span of the transfused red blood cells.

Blood purification is necessary for clearing harmful products out of the blood so as to reduce inhibition to the bone marrow and damages to the red blood cells. After blood is cleared, blood transfusion can be offered the effects will be much improved. Blood purification is a series of technologies which not only include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis but also hemoperfusion, hemofiltration, plasma exchange, immune adsorption, etc. They can not only remove small molecular substances such as creatinine, BUN and uric acid but also can remove middle-molecular and macromolecular toxins.

The most root way to treat anemia is to treat renal failure and improve kidney functions. Micro-Chinese medicines can activate residual renal functions, repair damaged renal tissues and re-generate dead and necrotic renal tissues so as to improve kidney functions.

When renal functions are improved and the blood and internal environment is cleared, anemia will be alleviated along with some nutritional therapy.
