How to Control High Creatinine Levels

2013-08-12 16:45

Serum creatinine level is an important indicator of kidney functions. The normal creatinine is about 0.5-1.2 for adults. Many factors can cause high creatinine levels such as dehydration, creatine supplement, strenuous activities or even too much intake of meat products and proteins.

However if high creatinine is persistent or if creatinine is much higher than the normal range, it is mostly caused by kidney problems because kidneys are the organs to discharge creatinine from the blood and discharge it through urination.
Treating high blood pressure and high blood sugar

Persistently high level of creatinine means that kidneys are damaged, therefore treating the underlying cause of renal damages can lower creatinine and prevent further increase from the root by slowing down illness progression and protecting residual kidney functions. High blood pressure and diabetes are two leading cause of kidney disease and kidney failure and of cause they are the major causes of elevated creatinine in the blood.

If your creatinine is high, it is very necessary to measure your blood pressure and blood sugar. And if your blood pressure or blood sugar is high, the first step for lowering high creatinine is to bring your blood pressure and blood sugar well under control or more renal damages will be caused and creatinine level will become even higher.

Healthy diets and healthy exercises

Low-protein, low-salt and low-creatine diet can help control high creatinine level by reducing building up of metabolic wastes and relieving burdens to the kidneys.

Avoid strenuous activities can reduce muscle breakdown and the production of creatinine because muscle metabolism is the main source of creatinine in the blood.

Medicines

Ketosteril and some herbal medicines can help lower creatinine. Herbal medicines like dandelion root, salvia, cinnamon, nettle leaf can help cleanse the kidneys and wash more creatinine and other wastes into urine.

Renal replacement therapy

When creatinine is extremely high (such as higher than 8) and Ccr (creatinine clearance rate) is below 10, dialysis will be offered to function as artificial kidney to discharge creatinine and other wastes from the blood.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is the combination of Chinese therapy and Western therapy. It aims at repairing renal damages and improving kidney functions so that excessive creatinine and other metabolic wastes such as uric acid, urea nitrogen can be discharged through the kidneys.
