Does high creatinine level mean kidney failure?

Kidney failure is a medical term used to describe the illness condition in which kidneys fail to filter blood and discharge wastes. Creatinine is one of the wastes produced by our body and normal discharged by our kidney. Therefore, creatinine level is always maintain in a stable range (0.5-1.3mg/dl). However, once an individual is diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, his kidneys will fail to discharge excessive creatinine, as a result of which serum creatinine increases. Our kidney is composed of over 222 million nephrons which is mainly composed of renal tubule and glomerular. When only a small part of nephrons are damaged, creatinine does not increase at all, as the other nephrons can help to remove the excessive creatinine out of the body. According to clinical experiments, creatinine level increases when about a half of kidney function is affected. Therefore, in cases of chronic kidney failure, high creatinine level always indicates kidney functions have been affected seriously.

Should I be worried with slightly high creatinine level?

As high creatinine level always indicate kidney failure, some people are worried when they found they have elevated creatinine level occasionally. Actually, many conditions can cause slightly high creatinine level like improper diet, drastic physical exercises before the test, creatine supplement and some medications and so on. Under such a condition, patients need to do a test again to found out whether they are suffer from kidney problem.

Creatinine level is just one of the index used to reflect how well the kidney function. In cases, of chronic kidney failure, high creatinine level means there are tons of toxins and wastes in the blood which is very life-threatening. Generally speaking, patients need to start dialysis to remove the wastes in the blood when creatinine level increases to 5. Therefore, to avoid dialysis, reducing creatinine level means a lot for kidney failure patients.
