What does high BUN mean?

To know clearly about it. Now, let’s learn what BUN is firstly. BUN is the abbreviation of Blood Urea Nitrogen and refers to urea nitrogen in blood. For an healthy adult individual, his BUN level should be in the range 6 to 20mg/dL (3.2-7.1mmol/L). Urea nitrogen is a waste product of the digestion of protein and mainly discharged through our kidneys. Therefore, high BUN level is always closely related with kidney condition.

Kidney failure is a common cause for high BUN, but it is not the only cause. In clinic, aside from kidney problem, many other factors like high protein intake, severe dehydration and hepatorenal syndrome also can cause elevation of BUN. In this light, it is of great importance for people who are told to have high BUN level to found out the root cause firstly and then take corresponding measures.

Is high BUN a dangerous sign for kidney failure patients?

For people with kidney failure, BUN level increases as failed kidneys can not discharge excess urea nitrogen. And usually, the poorer the kidney function, the higher the BUN level. Therefore, BUN level can help to reflect the severity of kidney problem to some extent and also high BUN always implies serious kidney damages.

Normally, each of our kidney is composed of one million nephron. In initial stage of kidney disease, only a small amount of kidney tissues are damaged and at that moment, residual nephron are effective enough to discharge excess urea nitrogen and maintain a normal BUN level. According to clinical studies, similar with serum creatinine, BUN level increases usually when a half of kidney function is affected. Only for kidney failure patients, high BUN always indicate serious kidney damages.
