Normal GFR And Kidney Failure

2013-02-05 11:07

Kidney failure can be classified into 5 stages according to the severity of renal damages and remaining kidney functions. In clinic, the 5 stages of renal failure is divided by calculating GFR.

What is GFR and relation of GFR and kidney failure

GFR is glomerular filtration rate which is a reliable index of kidney functions. The normal level of GFR is 125ml/min. The following are the 5 stages of kidney failure and their corresponding GFR levels.

Stage 1 kidney failure---GFR ≥ 90 with slightly damaged kidney functions.

Stage 2 kidney failure---GFR is 60-89 with mild renal damages.

Stage 3 kidney failure---GFR is 30-59 with moderate renal damages.

Stage 4 kidney failure---GFR is 15-29 with severe renal damages.

Stage 5 kidney failure---GFR is below 15 with the most advanced renal damages.

Actually GFR should be a more accurate and proper measurement of kidney functions than serum creatinine level, however many renal failure do not even know what is GFR. From what has been described above, hope you have a general understanding of GFR and it is very necessary and important to check the patients’ GFR besides creatinine level and creatinine clearance rate.

In the early stage of kidney failure, patients can have no obvious symptoms at all. However renal functions will experience gradual decline and patients will begin to have a series of symptoms and discomforts when GFR falls below 50 and renal failure progresses into the third stage such as uremia, fatigue, hypertension, urinary changes, etc. To help alleviate symptoms and prevent further deterioration, patients will begin to seek proper treatments and have modification of their improper diets and life habits.

Why GFR will decrease in renal failure?

The functions of the kidneys are performed by renal functional cells. The major renal functions is to remove metabolic wastes and toxins from the blood which depends on renal filtration ability.

Decrease of GFR means decline of kidney functions because of damages of these functional cells in glomeruli and tubules. Therefore to treat kidney failure from the root, effective treatments should repair damaged renal intrinsic cells so as to rebuild renal functions.

Immunotherapy is the combination of western and Chinese medicines which can not only treat symptoms but also aim at repairing renal damages and recovering renal functions. For any questions, welcome to leave us a message or send email to You can also contact our online doctors.
