Is Senna Okay for Dialysis Patient

2013-12-20 18:44

Is Senna Okay for Dialysis Patient, senna, dialysisIs senna okay for dialysis patient? Dialysis treatment is used to replace kidney function after kidney failure. It cleanses the blood of waste products, help manage electrolyte balance and remove excess fluid from the body. However, dialysis patients can still experience side effects or complications, and one complication of dialysis is constipation.

Your dialysis doctor may recommend a laxative, such as senna, to help alleviate your constipation. Senna is an herbal remedy for constipation. The senna leaf can be made into a capsule or you can use it to make tea. Commercial forms of senna laxatives are available such as brand name Senokot. Though senna is okay for dialysis patient, do not use senna if patients have a bowel obstruction or suffer from a bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis.

In general, dialysis patients are probably already on a low-potassium diet. While senna can lead to low potassium levels in the blood. A sudden decrease in blood potassium can affect patients’ heartbeat. Dialysis patients on blood thinners, such as Coumadin, should also avoid the use of senna. Senna can cause patients’ bowels to more too quickly and affect the natural production of vitamin K, leading to prolonged bleeding. So dialysis patients never take senna without first consulting their physicians.

Constipation is not the only complication of dialysis treatment. Others also discount the quality of patients’ life. Actually nowadays more and more patients decide to stop dialysis treatment.
