Why Dialysis Patients Have Vomiting And Nausea

2013-04-02 09:52

nausea vomiting dialysisDialysis is one important renal replacement therapy for removing metabolic wastes and toxins, relieving symptoms, improving life quality and prolonging life expectancy. However it is not rare that some kidney disease patients will have nausea, vomiting, lack of energy and other discomforts after dialysis.

Actually nausea and vomiting are very common among dialysis patients and it is mostly due to dialysis disequilibrium syndrome and nearly all patients will experience nausea and vomiting during their treatment with dialysis. Usually vomiting and nausea will not last very long time and patients can recover with proper drugs.

Another reason of nausea and vomiting is the continuous deterioration of kidney functions. Though simple dialysis can at first relieve nausea and vomiting by removing excess urea, creatinine from the blood, it can not cure kidney disease. Remaining kidney functions will continue to be lost and that is why some symptoms can become even worse after dialysis such as high creatinine, nausea, vomiting, anemia, etc. If dialysis is not adequate or if dialysis is stopped, patients will be more likely to develop discomforts like nausea and vomiting.

There are some prevention measures for nausea and vomiting for dialysis patients. Dialysis should be adequate and the interval between dialysis should not exceed 3 days; control body weight during dialysis sessions and monitor water intake to avoid too much fluid retention; do not have foods or avoid eating too much during dialysis; do not have sweet foods before dialysis.

To treat nausea and vomiting from the root, patients should not merely rely on dialysis which can not prevent the disease from progressing into complete renal failure though it can slow down its progression. Immunotherapy can improve kidney functions and to a certain degree help patients get rid of dialysis if patients still have some kidney functions and fairly urine output.
