The dialysis fistula is often referred to as an AV fistula which stands for arteriovenous fistula. Through this method, an artery and a vein are connected to eath other, in order to make needle insertion easier during dialysis. Dialysis fistula is a preferred type of access for dialysis because this method has a low risk for blood clots or infection.

Why kidney failure patients need to do a dialysis fistula?

Kidney dialysis is required by kidney failure patients, as it can help to purify blood which should have been done by kidneys. Kidney is the organ that take charge of excreting wastes out of the blood. For kidney failure patients, affected kidneys fail to work properly, as a result of which, wastes build up in the blood. These wastes are threatening to their body organs, so it is necessary to remove them out of the blood. A dialysis fistula is essential for kidney failure patients to have a successful dialysis.

How to take care of a dialysis fistula?

Once a dialysis fistula is created, kidney failure patients need to take good care of it so that it will not fail. If a dialysis fistula is fails, other methods of access for dialysis which may not be as effective will be needed.

If you are a kidney failure patient with dialysis fistula, you will experience vibration in the fistula location when the it begins to function properly. Vibration is a normal condition and once you stop feeling it, talk with your doctor directly because it may mean there is a blood clot.

Besides, after the dialysis, observe your fistula and fistula location directly. If the access site looks red or bleeds frequently, talk with your doctor about this problem.

Remember to wear loose clothes, so as to make sure a better blood circulation. A dialysis fistula can be created in different body parts like arms and chest. If it is made in arms, remember not to carry heavy items.

Wash the access site everyday with an antibacterial soap and this will lower your risk for infections and other unnecessary problems.

Side effects of a dialysis fistula

A dialysis fistula may cause many complications like aneurysm formation, clotting, narrowing of the fistula, infection and excessive bleeding and so on. If you feel anything discomforts, remember to talk with your doctors to for possible causes and management.
