Dialysis And End Stage Renal Failure

2013-02-01 11:09

At the mention of end stage renal failure, many people would think of dialysis and kidney transplant. Since not every patient has the money and chance to have kidney transplant, most ESRF patients have to rely on dialysis to sustain their life.

Usually when patients have less than 10% kidney functions, dialysis will be needed. Without dialysis or kidney transplant, end stage renal failure may caused death both from the complete shut down of the kidneys and various complications of the failed kidneys.
Dialysis has the following curative effects for end stage renal failure.

·clearing excessive accumulation of metabolic wastes and toxins from the body so as to lower high creatinine, high blood urea nitrogen (BUN), high uric acid so as to purify the blood and internal environment.

·removing excessive water, electrolytes and minerals outsides as as to relieve retention of water and sodium, rectify electrolyte disorders and recover acid-base balance.

·relieving complications of renal failure. High level of metabolic toxins in the body will cause a series of complications which are even life-threatening such as heart failure, metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia, uremic encephathy, etc. Dialysis can save critical patients and relieve these complications within short time. For example, the symptoms of brain dysfunctions can be alleviated within days or in some very rare cases within 2 weeks.

·sustaining life and prolonging life expectancy for end stage renal failure patients.

Dialysis can also bring the following side effects and complications to ESRF patients.

Dialysis disequilibrium syndrome---chest pain, back pain, fever, headache, restless, nausea, blurred vision, muscle cramps, seizure or even coma, etc.

Cardiovascular complications---low blood pressure, high blood pressure, heart failure, pericarditis, arrhythmia, angina pectoris, etc.

Dialysis encephalopathy---difficulty in speaking, stuttering, movement disorder, paresthesia, behavior disorder, dementia, etc.

Bone problems---osteodystrophy, bone pain, etc.

Anemia---fatigue, cold feeling, lack of energy, etc.

Dialysis is not an instant relief for end stage renal failure patients, but it can not replace all the functions of the kidneys such as endocrine function. What is more, it can not prevent further deterioration of renal damages, therefore more effective treatments should be sought to help repair renal damages and improve kidney functions.

Micro-Chinese medicine osmotherapy and immunotherapy can not only help alleviate symptoms of end stage renal failure, but also can recover certain kidney functions. Though they can not recover all the lost kidney functions, they can greatly improve patients’ life expectancy from the root.
