How Long Can Someone Live With End Stage Renal Failure

2013-02-03 15:47

It has been reported that there are about 80,000 people being diagnosed with chronic renal failure every year and kidney disease is the number nine leading cause of death in the United States. Without proper and timely treatment, end stage renal failure patients will have a greatly shortened life expectancy.

With dialysis

Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are the most common treatments for ESRF patients. Dialysis will be offered when patients are having persistently high creatinine, high blood urea nitrogen, significantly reduced urine output or blood potassium is higher than 6, creatinine clearance rate is below 8. Dialysis can not cure the disease, but it can prolong the patients’ life span. The average life span for kidney dialysis patients is about 5 years. There are about 20% end stage renal failure patients will die after they stop dialysis with no other more effective treatments.

The combination of Chinese medicine treatment with dialysis can relieve side effects of dialysis, improve curative efficacy of dialysis, reduce health-care costs so as to greatly improve patients’ life quality and life span.

With kidney transplant

Kidney transplant is much more effective treatment for end stage renal failure patients. It can enable patients 10 time more kidney functions than dialysis. It can help patients get rid of dialysis and give patients a more normal life after the new kidney is settled.

Successful kidney transplant can triple the life expectancy for end stage renal failure patients than dialysis and the average life span after kidney transplantation is about 17 years. For patients that are 65 years old or even older, the life expectancy will be doubled than those that are remaining on dialysis.

The above is just general situation, but it can not be applied to every patients. The exact life expectancy needs to taken into account many factors including the underlying cause of kidney failure, pathological type of renal damages, complications and treatments, age, gender, lifestyle, etc.
