What Will Happen To End Stage Renal Failure Without Dialysis

2013-02-23 15:01

Kidney patients will need to be put on dialysis when they develop end stage renal failure at which point they have less than 10-15% kidney functions. For chronic kidney failure, patients have to have dialysis for the rest of their life once it is started unless their kidney damages are reversed and their kidney functions are improved.

Dialysis can purify the bloodstream by removing wastes, toxins, excessive water, sodium and other electrolytes outsides. It can help maintain a safe level of certain chemicals in the body such as creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, bicarbonate. It can also help regulate blood pressure. Without dialysis, toxins and wastes will build up in the patients’ body and death will come within several weeks or even several days.

However, dialysis is not a cure for renal failure because it can not repair renal damages or reverse continuous decline of kidney functions. It is just a passive treatment to help replace part functions of the failed kidneys. Dialysis usually make patients feel comfortable because it solves many problems caused by kidney failure such as high creatinine, high blood pressure, etc. It can alleviate symptoms and discomforts, it can slow down illness progress, but it can not reverse illness progression, therefore more effective treatment that can help recover kidney functions should be sought instead of merely relying on dialysis.

However many patients on dialysis especially those that have been on dialysis for years will find that it it really hard to get rid of dialysis. Their serum creatinine level will become extremely high and their doctors will tell them that their life will be threatened if dialysis is stopped. Patients can develop the following symptoms such as fluid overload, confusion, unconsciousness, irregular breath, congestion, extremely poor appetite. Knowing these symptoms and signs can help patients’ relative and caregivers to seek timely medical help.

This is true that stopping dialysis might bring some life-threatening dangers to end stage renal failure patients. But if patients is receiving more effective treatments such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy and Immunotherapy, dialysis can be gradually stopped.
