Prognosis of End Stage Renal Disease with Dialysis

2013-03-04 13:48

ESRD, the abbreviation of End Stage Renal Disease, always used to describe the seriously failed kidneys which are no longer able to help sufferers maintain a normal life. With ESRD, patients will suffer from various health tissues like heart failure, bone problem, skin problem and so on. Therefore, once being diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease, dialysis or kidney transplant will be needed to improve the prognosis. However, what is the prognosis of ESRD patients with dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical procedure in which blood is filtered by a machine outside the patient’s body. It helps to remove the wastes in the blood, which will lower patient’s risk of developing serious complications. Therefore, dialysis means a lot for ESRD patients to live a longer time and have a better prognosis.

Although dialysis is very helpful, it is not perfect solution, as it can not repair injured renal cells. Kidney function decreases because more and more renal cells are injured. Under such a condition, without repairing injured kidney cells, kidney function can not be improved. Dialysis helps to clean blood, but can not improve kidney condition, so ESRD patients with dialysis need to do it repeatedly. According to the illness condition, patients may need to do dialysis once, twice, or trice a week. In general, for ESRD patients with dialysis, the lower the frequency, the better the prognosis.

Besides, to have a good prognosis, ESRD patients with dialysis also need to prevent dialysis side effects in advance. Common side effects of dialysis include headache, constipation, muscle cramp, low blood pressure, restless leg syndrome, high fever, disequilibrium syndrome and so on. Among them, some of them can be the real cause for patient’s death. Therefore, it is of great importance for dialysis patients to prevent them.
