What Does Stage 5 Renal Failure Mean

Stage 5 renal failure is also called stage 5 renal disease or end stage renal disease. It is often abbreviated as ESRD in clinic. Renal failure is divided into 5 stages according to GFR (glomerular filtration rate) and severity of renal damages. Stage 5 renal failure is the most advanced stage and patients have less than 15% or 10% kidney functions and they have to rely on renal replacement therapies to sustain their life - dialysis or kidney transplant.

Stage 5 renal failure means that the patients will have the following symptoms since nearly all kidney functions have been lost.

Excess water, electrolytes, metabolic wastes and toxins will accumulate in the patient’s body due to damaged renal filtration system and decreased renal filtration function. Patients will have general sick feeling such as fatigue, chronic pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, poor digestion, headache, skin itching or dry skin, muscle twitching, reduced urine output, swelling, anemia, easy bleeding, difficulty in concentration, confusion, seizure, high blood pressure, decreased sexual interest, etc.

Stage 5 renal failure means that the patient’s life is threatened. Complete renal failure will not only affect the patient’s normal daily life but also will pose great threaten to the patient’s life. What is more, stage 5 renal failure will cause a series of complications in other organs and systems such as blood system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, etc. These complications are great risk factors to the patient’s life.

Stage 5 renal failure means that you need immediate and effective treatment. To sustain the patient’s life, patients need to have dialysis or kidney transplant. Dialysis can replace the functions of the failed kidneys to remove wasteful substances from the blood so as to purify the blood and control symptoms and complications. Kidney transplant can help patients regain kidney function and get rid of dialysis.
