Muscle Twitching With ESRD

2013-05-06 09:46

muscle twitching with ESRDESRD stands for end stage renal disease and it is the final stage of a variety of kidney diseases. Most ESRD patients have less than 10% kidney functions and there are excessive accumulation of wasteful and toxic materials in the body due to severely impaired renal filtration system.

ESRD patients will have a series of discomforts and ill feelings due to uremic states. Muscle twitching is very common among ESRD patients and the major reason is hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels). When calcium concentration in the blood is low, the irritability of the neuromuscular will be increased and patients are easy to have muscle twitching.

There are several causes of hypocalcemia in ESRD and according to the causes we can find proper measures to rectify calcium deficiency in the body so as to prevent and relieve muscle twitching.

1. Inadequate vitamin D intake due to diet restriction, poor appetite, digestive and gastrointestinal disorders.

2. Metabolic disorder of vitamin D. Kidney failure patients lack 1-hydroxylase and there is deficiency of active vitamin D3 which can result in reduced absorption of calcium in the gastrointestinal tract and low calcium level in the blood.

3. High blood phosphorus levels. Reduced GFR causes reduced excretion of phosphorus and high blood phosphorus can further aggravate low blood calcium to maintain constant production of calcium and phosphorus.

4. Some diuretics that are used by ESRD patients can also cause or worsen hypocalcemia.

Usually muscle twitching can be greatly improved when hypocalcemia is treated. However in some cases muscle twitching is still can not be controlled after calcium supplement. This means that the muscle twitching is not only due to low blood calcium levels, it might be due to the neurologic disorders in the brain.

Besides muscle twitching, ESRD patients will also experience the following symptoms and discomforts such as tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, headache, swelling, etc.

Only when renal damages are repaired and renal functions are improved can muscle twitching and all the other symptoms be cured from the root.
