2013-03-16 11:35

FSGS is not easy to cure and it usually takes relatively long time to treat the disease. During the treatment period and even in clinical remission period, proper diets are important for patients.

FSGS is very easy to relapse and each relapse will worsen illness conditions, there are certain foods that need to be avoided so as to help consolidate curative effects of prescribed medicines, supplement and treatments and reduce the incidence of symptoms relapse.

Fast foods and restaurant foods.

Fast foods and restaurant foods are usually loaded with salt and fat which should be avoided or limited by FSGS patients. Therefore it is wise to cook healthy dishes at your own home. Home-cooked meals for FSGS patients should be low-fat, low-salt, low-protein and high-vitamin. If you are not sure what are the healthy recipes, you can surf the internet or consult a renal dietitian.

Salt. Daily salt intake for FSGS patients should be limited within 6g to help control swelling and high blood pressure. Stable blood pressure is good for stabilizing illness conditions of FSGS.

Protein. Too much protein intake will worsen proteinuria and add extra burdens to the kidneys. Proper protein intake is 1-1.3g/kg/d which should be further reduced if illness continues to become worse. Proteins of high biological values such as lean meat, fish, egg white, milk can be consumed.

Fat. Fatty foods should be avoided to help lower high cholesterol and high blood pressure and lower the risk of heart problems.

Scanned foods and highly processed foods.

They usually contain a lot of food additives which can produce many metabolic wastes or even toxins and increase burdens to the kidneys. Therefore it is advised that FSGS patients as well as other kidney disease patients to have less or no processed foods.

Alcohol, coffee and other caffeine-containing foods and drinks should be avoided to FSGS patients.

Besides diets, proper treatment should be sought. It has been proved that traditional Chinese medicines can reduce side effects of hormones and improve curative effects in treating FSGS and reducing recurrence of symptoms.
