2013-01-11 09:52

nausea in kidney failureKidney failure is a life-threatening disease and you may experience various symptoms like nausea, vomit, dizziness, tiredness, anemia, high blood pressure, blood urine and so on if you are unfortunately diagnosed with kidney failure. Nausea is just one of the symptoms of kidney failure and it is more likely to happen in the morning. However, how does kidney failure cause nausea and how to alleviate this symptom?

How does kidney failure cause nausea?

Actually, in case of kidney failure, nausea usually occurs because of high toxins in the blood. We know in our normal life, kidneys paly a role of filter. They help us filter blood and discharge toxins from our body. However, once their function decreases, toxins can not be excreted fully and timely, as a result of which, toxins build up in the blood. Urea nitrogen is one of the toxins and can be decomposed into ammonia. Ammonia stimulates patient’s intestines and stomach and therefore cause nausea.

How to alleviate nausea in kidney failure?

Since we know high urea nitrogen is the cause of nausea, we can alleviate this symptom by controlling blood urea nitrogen level. The following several measurements are helpful:

1. Limit protein intake: urea nitrogen is the end product of protein, so by controlling protein intake, we can reduce the generation of blood urea nitrogen in some ways. However, as protein is the necessary substance of our body, patients need to ingest a certain of protein everyday. Considering this, kidney failure patients can eat some high quality protein which not only can meet the demand of our body, but also can produce less wastes. High quality protein is concluded by fish, egg white, milk and lean meat.

2.Drink some water in the morning: Drink some water in the morning can help dilute urea nitrogen concentration in the blood, which can help to alleviate nausea in some instances.

3.Treat kidney failure as a whole: since high blood urea nitrogen is caused by decreased kidney function, we can alleviate nausea symptom by improving kidney condition. For kidney failure patients, there are healthy, damaged and dead kidney tissues in their kidney. For these dead kidney tissues, we can not make them alive again, but for these damaged kidney tissues, we can repair them by increasing their self-curative ability. As long as kidney function is increased, blood urea nitrogen decreases and also nausea symptom is alleviated effectively.
