Kidney failure is an illness that can cause electrolyte disturbance like high sodium level, high phosphorus level, high potassium level and low calcium level. In such a case, improper diet will cause extra kidney burden and aggravate electrolyte imbalance, so kidney failure patients need to avoid foods high in sodium, potassium or phosphorus. However, in our daily life, many vegetables and fruits are high in mineral, and to kidney failure patients have to avoid these foods. Vegetables and fruits are the major sources of fiber which can contribute to the movement of stool. Because of strict diet limitation, kidney failure patients may not ingest enough fiber and thus cause constipation.
2. Peritoneal dialysis
Failed kidney can not help patients maintain a normal life, so when kidney failure is diagnosed, patients will be suggested to start dialysis or kidney transplant. Peritoneal dialysis is the second most commonly used medical method for kidney failure patients. It uses a membrane inside patient’s body as a filter to clear wastes and extra fluid from the body and to return electrolyte levels to normal. The pressure of the peritoneal dialysis fluid in the abdomen can cause movement of the bowel to slow down, increasing the likelihood of constipation.
3. Fluid limitation
Some kidney failure patients may experience swelling symptom which need them to limit fluid intake. Long-term fluid limitation also contributes to constipation.
Constipation is a bothersome problem for kidney failure patients and affect their life badly. Therefore, it is necessary for kidney failure patients to prevent constipation in advanced.
