Why Kidney Failure Patients Have Bad Appetite

2012-12-19 12:45

Bad appetite is one of the major symptoms and discomforts of kidney failure patients. We know that kidney is vital organ for maintaining normal life activities and there will be a series of symptoms and complications affecting kidneys and many other organs and systems.

The earliest symptoms in digestive system is bad appetite or indigestion and in advanced renal damages there will be anorexia, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. One reason of these symptoms is due to the accumulation of metabolic wastes and toxins such as creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. Bacteria in the intestinal tract can decompose the urea into ammonia which will stimulate the gastrointestinal mucose and cause inflammations and multiple superficial small ulcers. Besides, hemorrhage of the digestive tract is also very common due to gastric mucosal erosion or peptic ulcers.

Bad appetite may also be caused by dysfunctions and disorder of the central nervous system which is poisoned and damaged by too much wastes and toxins.

The root cause of poor appetite is loss of kidney functions and excessive accumulation of metabolic wastes. So the first step is to remove these harmful substances and then seek proper and effective treatments to improve kidney functions.

Dialysis can help improve appetite by discharging these waste products out of the blood, rectifying disorders and imbalances of water, electrolytes and acid-base. There will be immediate and obvious alleviation of appetite after dialysis.

In case of bad appetite, nausea and vomiting, patients are easy to develop dehydration, therefore proper supply of water should be guaranteed, especially when urine output is all right, there should not be so strict restriction on water intake.

If patients do not want to have meals, they can have more fruits and vegetables to avoid malnutrition and boost their vigor and energy.

Besides, some herbal medicines and external application of Chinese medicines such as massage, acupuncture and medicated bath have mild and obvious effects on regulating gastrointestinal digestion and alleviating bad appetite.
