Possible Causes of Excess Vomiting In Renal Failure

High BUN (blood urea nitrogen) is the dominant cause of excess vomiting in renal failure, but it is not the only one. For some renal failure patients who are detected with blood urea nitrogen level in normal range, they may also experience excess vomiting symptom. Why is this? What are the possible causes of excess vomiting in renal failure?

Vomiting is just one of the clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal discomforts. In renal failure, it occurs easily in the following several conditions:

1. High blood urea nitrogen

Urea nitrogen is a waste that needs to be discharged by kidney. Failed kidneys can not function properly, leading to accumulation of urea nitrogen in the blood. When blood urea nitrogen increases to a certain level, vomiting symptom occurs.

2. Gastrointestinal edema

Gastrointestinal edema is another possible cause of excess vomiting in renal failure. Vomiting symptom is usually accompanied by poor appetite, diarrhea, abdominal distension and even hematochezia.

3. Acidosis

Kidneys help to discharge excess acidic materials and when kidney function gets impaired, acidity in the blood increases. With acidosis, renal failure patients are also very likely to suffer from vomiting.

4. Some medications

Renal failure occurs as the last stage of kidney problem. Although it refers to dysfunction of kidney, it may involve many other organs or systems. To live a better life, renal failure patients usually need to take various medicines to control their illness condition and vomiting may appear as a side effect of some medications.

5. Electrolyte disturbance

High potassium is a common electrolyte disturbance in renal failure, which can cause vomiting symptom. In severe, enteroplegia may also occur.
