A Healthy Diet for People Just on DialysisOnce you start dialysis, you may find your diet has to make some changes to meet the new need of your body. If you just go on dialysis, don’t worry! Today, you can follow me to learn how to make a healthy diet for people just on dialysis.

Consume correct amount of potassium

If you are on hemodialysis, the mineral potassium may build up between dialysis treatment and cause irregular heartbeats that may even lead to death. Therefore, low-potassium foods may add to your diet. If you go through peritoneal dialysis, this suggestion will be quite different, because peritoneal dialysis can remove potassium from the body and may cause low potassium level. Hence, with peritoneal dialysis, you may need to eat some high-potassium foods. The following is a food list with different contents of potassium.

Foods are rich in potassium: Spinach, lettuce, water spinach, amaranth, mushroom, seaweed, kelp, carrot, potato, banana, tomato, orange, mango, persimmon, melon, grapefruit, etc.

Foods are low in potassium: Pineapple, papaya, watermelon, pear, strawberry, lemon water, etc.

Eat relatively more high-quality protein and vitamin than before

During the dialysis, small amount of protein and vitamin is removed from the body that requires you to supply them timely. Instead of high-quantity protein, high-quality protein such as fish, lean meat, egg white and milk are better for you. As for vitamin, fruits and vegetables are good supply. However, not all fruits and vegetables are suitable for you. To make sure what fruits and vegetables you can eat, you had better firstly tell the kidney experts your condition through leaving a message or sending email to

Limit the intake of sodium

Between dialysis sessions, fluid is more likely to remain in the body. Taking excess sodium can worsen patients’ condition, so you had better avoid high-sodium foods such as canned foods, processed foods, condiments, fast foods, hamburgers, etc.

In addition, you can drink relatively more amount of water, because dialysis can bring more water from the body, but if you can’t make any urine, you should limit the intake of water. There are many other tips you should make according to your specific condition.
