What Are The Symptoms of IgA Nephropathy in ChildrenIgA Nephropathy not only affects adults, but also children. It is a progressive kidney disorder caused by IgA deposition in mesangial area. If not treated timely and effectively, kidney failure will be finally caused, so a timely diagnosis will be of great importance. Here, we will give an introduction about dominant symptoms of IgA Nephropathy in children. And if any parents found their kids have all or some of these symptoms, bringing them to hospital for examination will be necessary.

Common symptoms of IgA Nephropathy in children include:

1. Hematuria

Basing on current medical statistic, about 40%-50% of IgA Nephropathy patients have episodic hematuria which usually starts within a day or two of a non-specific upper respiratory tract infection. Hematuria can be gross or microscopic. For gross hematuria, it is visible with naked eyes, so paying attention to children’s urine will be helpful for a timely diagnosis of hematuria.

2. Foamy urine

It is not normal for a child to have urine with lots of small foams which do not disappear within several minutes. In clinic, foamy urine always indicates proteinuria which refers to the presence of excess protein in urine. Kidneys filter blood and during this process, nutrition like protein can be kept in blood and wastes like creatinine will be discharged. However, when kidney tissues are damaged due to IgA Nephropathy, kidney function will be affected, leading to leakage of protein in urine.

3. Swelling

Swelling or edema is another visible symptom of IgA Nephropathy. For children with IgA Nephropathy, swelling occurs easily in eyelid, face, hands, legs, feet and testis for boy. In IgA Nephropathy, swelling results from buildup of lots of fluid in the body and needs children to limit their fluid intake in daily life.

4. Elevated blood pressure

Actually, not only IgA Nephropathy, but also many other types of kidney disease can cause elevation of blood pressure, so measuring blood pressure regularly is also very helpful.

IgA Nephropathy progresses over time. And when it develops to advanced stage, children will experience many other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, itching skin and fatigue will occur gradually. And the best method to prevent these bothersome symptoms is to stop IgA Nephropathy from progression effectively.
