Does High Blood Urea Nitrogen Mean Impaired Kidney Function

2014-04-09 23:33

Early detection or prevention is important to prevent kidney disease or control the progression of the disease. Blood urine nitrogen(BUN) is one of the indicator of how kidneys are functioning. But does high blood urea nitrogen mean impaired kidney function?

As we all know, kidneys play an vital role in maintaining the health of our body. They are responsible for cleaning the blood by discharging the toxins and metabolic waste; keeping water and electrolyte in balance; regulating blood pressure, etc. When kidneys have problems, our body will be in a big disorder. For example, the urine nitrogen, which is the metabolic waste of protein will build up in blood, leading to a series of symptoms, such as swelling, dizziness, nausea, vomit, itchy skin, shortness of breath, dysphoria, headache, insomnia and so on.

The healthy kidneys are supposed to keep the urine nitrogen within certain level in blood. Once kidneys are impaired, BUN level will be elevated. There are several kinds of kidney disease that can all result in high blood urine nitrogen, like glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis, chronic or acute renal failure, etc. Therefore, detecting the blood urine nitrogen level is one of the important method to evaluate whether there is impaired kidney function.

However, high BUN does not definitely mean that kidney function is severely damaged. It is also influenced such factors as the diet, renal blood flow and urine volume. Many other factors can raise BUN level, such as hemorrhage of digestive tract, urinary tract obstruction, serious infection, heart failure, fever, dehydration, uses of drugs, and overmuch intake of protein, etc.

In conclusion, High blood urine nitrogen maybe a symptom of impaired kidney function. It is not always mean that. You are suggested to take an overall physical examination if signs of kidney problems. Do not make any decision before making clear the exact cause.
