2013-09-11 16:43

banana, diabetics, kidney failureIs banana good for diabetics with kidney failure? Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in the world and kidney damage is just one of common complications of diabetes. A healthy diet is expected to help relieve some symptoms and slow down the progression of condition to a certain degree. If coming to this topic, we have to take both diabetes and kidney damage into account.

Bananas are safe for diabetics. They are low in calories, but high in flber, vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium. The fiber keeps you full and satisfied, vitamin C boosts your immune system, vitamin B6 is a mood enhancer and potassium controls your blood pressure.

Neither kind of banana produce a blood sugar response as high as plain white bread. The researchers said up to 90% of the carbs in an underripe banana come from starch, but when it ripens the carbs are mostly free sugars. So, that bananas, especially underripe ones, are an acceptable alternative as between-meal snacks for type 2 diabetic subjects.

However, when condition develops kidney failure, electrolyte disturbance can be commonly seen. Potassium will build up in the body if kidneys are unable to work normally, which causes high level of potassium. Hyperkalemia is a serious and potentially life-threatening disorder, it can cause muscle fatigue, weakness, nausea, abnormal heart rhythms, paralysis, etc. Having a blood potassium level higher than 7.0mmol/L can be dangerous and requires immediate treatment. If kidney failure patients have high potassium level, bananas should be avoided. However, if their potassium level is in normal range, kidney failure patients do not need to forbid eating bananas.
