Can Kidney Failure Patients Have Garlic

2013-01-22 10:57

garlicGarlic is a common seasoning and it can also be taken as one medicine. Garlic is nutritional and its many benefits to human health have been widely known by the public such as sterilization, anti-tumor, anti-fatigue, anti-aging, protecting against cold and it is also good for protecting liver function, preventing cardio-cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes.

Since garlic has a lot of benefits and many are good for kidney failure patients such as lowering blood sugar level, lowering cholesterol, promoting vasodilation, regulating blood pressure, inhibiting formation of blood clots and preventing arteriosclerosis as well as antiseptic and antiphlogistic effects.

However we know that garlic especially raw garlic is kind of spicy and has stimulating smell, therefore renal failure patients should not have too much garlic though garlic has a lot of benefits to them.

This is because renal failure patients’ kidneys have been damaged and they should have light foods that are easy to be digested. Garlic, hot pepper, tobacco, alcohol and other spicy and stimulating foods should all be avoided or at least be limited for the sake of their kidney health.

The stimulating smell and taste of garlic will be much reduced after it is cooked, therefore renal failure patients can have some cooked garlic. However many benefits of garlic will be greatly reduced after it is cooked.

However it still depends on your specific illness and physical conditions. For example, for renal failure caused by diabetes, patients can have garlic and it is good for controlling high blood sugar and high blood pressure, preventing heart disease, promoting blood circulation and enhancing immunity. However, they should avoid garlic or at least do not have too much if their kidney damages have been very serious and their kidney functions have been severely damaged.

Besides limitation of spicy and stimulating foods, renal failure patients should also limit foods that are high in potassium and purine such as banana, potato, soy sauce, spinach, animal offals, etc especially if they have hyperalaemia and gout.
