kids kidney problem raisinKidney disease is a relatively serious illness among children. Compared with adult patients, they are more susceptible to have relapse due to their low immunity. Nursing cares and proper diets for children are very important and many parents consult us whether their diseased kids can have raisin or not.

Raisin is very delicious and it is considered to be a healthy snack for both children and adult. Raisin does have many benefits to kids with kidney problems.

Eating raisin can help alleviate cold feeling, back pain, fatigue and anemia. It can also help enhance immunity and improve the kids’ disease-resistance ability.

Kids with kidney problems often have anemia and eating raisin can greatly relieve anemia because it contains rich iron and calcium.

Raisin can also help remove excessive fats and make blood flow smooth so as to lower high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol.

Raisin contains a variety of minerals, vitamins, amino acids which can help fight fatigue and improve the body’s nutritional states.

However if the diseased children have the following illness conditions, raisin should be limited or avoided.

Diabetes. Though raisin can help normalize blood pressure and treat obesity, it contains high level of glucose, therefore if the child has diabetes, they should not have raisin or it will further increase their blood sugar level and worsen renal damages. Even if their blood sugar is well brought under control, it is not recommended to have too much raisin.

High blood potassium. Kidney dysfunction often cause potassium buildup in the patient’s blood due to diminished glomerular filtration rate. Too much potassium can cause serious damages to the heart functions or even lead to heart failure and sudden death. Therefore controlling blood potassium level through diets and medicines is very important. Raisin contains 749mg potassium per 100g, therefore it should be avoided or limited if the diseased kids have higher than normal potassium level in their blood.
