Why Renal Failure Patients Should Avoid Beer

2013-05-21 11:15

Why Renal Failure Patients Should Avoid BeerModerate intake of beer is beneficial to the health. Such as it can help prevent and treat kidney stones, prevent the formation of thrombus, protect heart function and lower the risk of heart diseases, prevent ischemic stroke, increase the sensitivity of insulin and lower the risk of diabetes, etc.

Though drinking beer has many benefits, the safe amount of beer for renal failure patients is very small which is very hard to handle. It is very easy for the patients to have over consumption of beer if there is no strict restriction. Over intake of beer can be very harmful to the patients. It can worsen their symptoms, aggravate illness conditions and cause loss of more kidney functions.

Drinking beer can further increase high creatinine levels. Renal failure can cause elevated levels of creatinine, BUN and uric acid due to protein metabolic disorder and declined renal excretion function. Alcohol in beer can affect the nitrogen balance in the body, increase protein decomposition and further increase the accumulation of urea nitrogen in the blood. This will definitely increase burdens and strains to the kidneys and it is very harmful to renal failure patients.

Excessive beer can affect the patient’s appetite and cause malnutrition. This is not good for the recovery of renal damages. Alcohol can cause reduced blood flow to the kidneys, worsen renal ischemia and hypoxia. This will cause worsening of renal functions and increase burdens to the heart.

Alcohol can also cause hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and increase the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular complications. Renal failure is often not the cause of death for patients. Instead, cardiovascular complications of renal failure are often the cause of death.

From the above analysis, we can see that the reason and importance of avoiding beer and other alcoholic drinks for renal failure patients. The habit to drink beer and at the same time take prescribed drugs should be totally avoided because it is especially harmful to renal failure patients.
