Foods For Kidney Failure With High BUN

2013-05-27 10:01

foods for kidney failure with high BUNWhat foods are good for kidney failure patients with high BUN? BUN stands for blood urea nitrogen and is an indication for renal health. High BUN suggest impaired kidney function and the higher the BUN level is, the poorer the kidney function is. For kidney failure patients with high BUN, choosing right foods is necessary for protecting residual kidney function. Well then, what are the foods for kidney failure with high BUN?

Firstly, eat less foods high in protein

Urea nitrogen is a waste product of protein metabolism in the blood. It is formed by the liver and carried by the blood to the kidneys for excretion. For kidney failure patients, affected kidneys can not work properly to discharge the excess urea nitrogen timely. Consequently, large amounts of urea nitrogen pile up in blood, leading to high BUN. Because of this, it is imperative to limit protein intake by eating less high protein foods like bean, bean products, chicken breast, cheese, pork loin, tofu, yogurt, pumpkin and squash and so on.

Secondly, limit salt intake

Salt is rich in sodium. For kidney failure patients, high intake of salt will cause severe fluctuation of sodium level in blood and elevation of blood pressure. It seems there is no relationship between slat and high BUN, but high salt intake indeed elevates BUN level. For kidney failure patients, their kidneys are damaged seriously and can not bear heavy burden. High salt intake will increase kidney burden and thus worsen kidney condition. With the decrease of kidney function, BUN level increases. From this point of view, adding less salt will be helpful for kidney failure patients with high BUN. Besides, eating less pickled foods and sauces.

Thirdly, leave far away from foods high in potassium

High potassium level is a common complain of kidney failure patients. Kidney is responsible for keeping potassium level in normal range. Once kidney failure is caused, high potassium foods will be limited and even avoided to protect residual kidney function; otherwise, further kidney damages will be caused, which can lead to further rise of BUN. Foods high in potassium include avocado, cantaloupe, tomatoes, crimini mushrooms, swiss chard, spinach and broccoli and so on.

Fourthly, adjust phosphorus intake if lab tests show its level is higher than the normal range

High phosphorus level affect kidney function in the same way with high potassium level. Therefore, if you are told your phosphorus level is out of the reference value, avoid foods high in phosphorus like whole wheat and bran mixes, cottage cheese or cheddar, peanut butter, corn, broccoli, chicken and turkey, sunflower seeds, legumes and nuts and so on.

The above is the introduction about foods for kidney failure with high BUN. Although diet changes help to slow down growth rate of BUN, it is not a real solution. For kidney failure patient, high BUN level occurs because of decreased kidney function, so repairing kidney damages to improve kidney function is the key point to lower high BUN level.
