Banana is an excellent source of potassium in our daily life. Therefore, for kidney failure patients, they are running high risk for hyperkalemia.

For a healthy adult, the level of potassium should be between 3.5 and 5.0mEq/L. When potassium level is higher than the normal range, symptoms like hyperventilation, nausea, slow or weak pulse. In extreme cases, high potassium level can cause heart problem. Therefore, for kidney failure patients who are told to have high level of potassium, eating less banana is necessary.

Adjust potassium intake according to exact illness condition

Though kidney failure is a major cause for high potassium level, it does not mean everyone with kidney failure will definitely suffer from high potassium level. In some cases, kidney failure patients may suffer from low potassium level in blood. And under such a condition, eating much more foods high in potassium is very necessary.

Fruits high in potassium: dried apricots, prunes, dried zante currants, dates, dried figs, dried coconut, avocados, banana, kiwi fruit, nectarines and peaches.

Vegetables high in potassium: sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, swiss chard, mushrooms, sweet potato, kale, zucchini with skin, green beans, asparagus and brussels sprouts.

Besides, for these who are low in potassium level, although the above listed foods high in potassium can help to normalize potassium level, some of these foods may do harm for their kidney in other ways.
