Can Chronic Kidney Failure Patients Do Exercises

2012-12-21 15:06

Chronic kidney failure is gradual loss of part or all kidney function after years of renal lesions. With reduced kidney functions, most patients are much weaker and have lowered immunity. And since kidney disease is easy to relapse, most patients think that they can not do work or exercises. Actually this is not true.

To stopping work and have adequate rest is for the onset of the period and this is not appropriate for those that have achieved clinical remission. Regular and proper exercises are good for building up physical fitness and enhancing immunity. Actually proper exercise is one natural, cheap, healthy and effective remedy for kidney failure patients.

Kidney failure patients often have the complications of high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, gout and cardiovascular diseases. It has been shown that most kidney failure patients did not die of failed kidney, but die of cardiovascular complications such as heart failure, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction, etc. Therefore preventing and treating complications and controlling illness progression is the key point for a longer life expectancy.

Regular exercises can reduce the risk of cerebrovascular complications, promote digestion, improve life quality and prolong life span.

Guidance for proper exercises

In the beginning, just do some mild exercises and gradually increase the exercise intensity.

Exercise frequency

3 times aerobic exercises and last for 30 minutes each time

Exercise selection

There are some exercises that are not suitable for kidney failure patients such as combat sports or anaerobic exercises which can make them feel vomiting, choking sensation in chest and short of breath. Since their kidney functions have been affected, they can not bear too strenuous exercises which might worsen their illness conditions.

Some aerobic exercises such as walking, jogging, cycling, hiking and tai chi are all good choices.
