What Does Low GFR Mean

2013-05-05 09:45

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) indicates how well the kidneys are working. The higher GFR, the better kidneys function. However, once you are tested out low GFR, for example your GFR level is 5ml/min, you must wonder “what does low GFR mean”.

Generally, our GFR level ranges between 90 and 120ml/min, but these values may change with age. If your GFR is lower than the normal level, it means your kidneys don’t do their job optimally and you may have kidney disease. Low GFR, compared with proteinuria, creatinine, blood urine, bun, etc, is more accurate to determine which stage of kidney disease you are. The lower your GFR, the worse your condition is. You can find out how severe your medical condition is according to the following information.

Stage 1 of Chronic Kidney Disease: GFR>90

Stage 2 of Chronic Kidney Disease: GFR 60-89

Stage 3 of Chronic Kidney Disease: GFR 30-59

Stage 4 of Chronic Kidney Disease: GFR 15-29

Stage 5 of Chronic Kidney Disease: GFR<15

Once your GFR is lower than the normal, the blood passes through the kidney tiny filters will reduce and then many wastes and toxins will build up in the body. The build up of these harmful substances, in turn, can cause further kidney damage and worsen your condition. If uncontrolled effectively, your kidney disease may deteriorate to renal failure that is nearly impossible to reverse.

To prevent renal failure and avoid dialysis, GFR improvement is a must. Increasing the blood passing through kidney filters and making the damaged kidney cells active can help reverse your condition. Today, we mainly recommend two treatments: Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy and Immunotherapy. These two treatments are not suitable for all kidney disease patients.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is mainly used to extend patients’ blood vessels so as to increase the blood flow on the kidney filters and improve their kidney function, so people with early stage of kidney disease can use this treatment to reverse their condition.

As for people with end stage kidney disease, their kidneys nearly lose all of their function, so Immunotherapy, combining TCM and blood purifications, are preferred by them to cleanse their blood and repair damaged kidney cells.

A correct treatment is able to make you have a higher GFR and live healthier and longer, so you can’t give up even though your GFR is much lower than the normal.
