Diet Tips After Kidney Transplant

Here are some diet tips given by renal dietitians. The general diet principle for kidney transplant patients are high-quality protein, high vitamins, low salt, low sugar and low fat. The aim is to provide enough nutritions, control too much gain of body weight, promote wood healing and recovery of kidney functions and lower the risk of rejection and infections.

High-quality proteins

After kidney transplant, patients have to take immunosuppressant to lower organ-rejection. Immunosuppressant can speed up protein decomposition and inhibit protein synthesis. However patients need adequate proteins to promote the recovery from the surgery. Therefore patients should have high-quality proteins such as fresh water fish, egg, lean meat, etc. White meat is better than red meat because red meat contains more fat and cholesterol. White meats include fish, chicken and red meat include pork, beef, etc. One egg a day is good for kidney patients after kidney transplant.

More vitamins

Vitamins is the essential nutrition for sustaining life, kidney transplant patients should have more vitamins which mainly comes from fresh vegetables and fruits.

Low-fat

Some immunosuppressant can cause hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis, therefore patients should limit foods that are high-cholesterol such as animal offals, egg yolk(one is okay),etc. Plant oil is better to replace animal oil while cooking dishes.

Low-sugar

Some drugs that kidney transplant patients take might induce high blood glucose or even diabetes which is harmful to the transplanted kidney and cardiovascular system, therefore low-sugar diet is more healthier.

Calcium supply

Immunosuppressant can inhibit calcium absorption and increase its excretion, therefore patients should have some proper supply of high-calcium foods such as dairy products so as to prevent muscle cramps, back pain, joint pain, osteoporosis and other bone problems.

Avoid renal tonics

Before kidney transplant, supplement of renal tonics can help improve kidney functions and enhance immune system. However after the surgery, no renal tonic is allowed because it might affect the efficacy of immunosuppressant and cause organ rejection. Foods that can help improve immunity should also be avoided such as white fungus, black fungus, ginseng, velvet antler, etc.
