Home Nursing Cares for Kidney Transplant Patients

Kidney transplant is an ideal therapy for many end stage renal diseases and it can help restore patients’ kidney functions. Even though, patients need to pay more attention to their daily life so as to improve the survival rate and life span of the transplanted kidney.

The average life span of transplanted kidney in China is about 5-7 years, of cause there are some cases that the transplanted kidneys can last for more than 20 years. Survival rate has much to do with home nursing cares after the surgery.

Patients should have adequate bed rest and lie on their back, do not curl the legs.

Medications

However matching the transplanted kidney is, there will be rejections after the transplantation and patients need to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their life to protect the transplanted kidney from being rejected by the body. Take prescribed medicines and drugs under the doctors guidance and do not stop or reduce dosage of the medicine without the doctor’s permission.

Prevent infections

Patients’ immunity are much lowered both due to years of kidney failure, the surgery and intake of immunosuppressant, therefore they are more susceptible to infections which will easily induce rejections. Once there is any infections, proper and timely treatments should be received.

Self testing of several indicators

·temperature is the sensitive indicator of infections and rejections

·kidney pain

·urinary changes including urine color, urine volume, blood or bubbles in urine, urine output during night

·blood pressure

Proper exercises

Recovered kidney functions give patients increased appetite, patients are easy to gain a lot of weight in short time along with the effects of hormones, therefore it is necessary to control body weight because too much weight gain can cause lipid metabolism disorder, vascular diseases and pose great threaten to kidney functions.

Proper exercises include walking, tai chi, golf, swimming, jogging, etc. But it is better not to travel the first year after kidney transplant.

Diet

Drink water according to urine output

Low salt and low-sugar

Proper supply of calcium

Eat less sea foods

No fried foods

More fruits and less meat(fish is okay)

No tonic such as ginseng, ganoderma lucidum, astragalus membranaceus, edible fungus, etc.
Besides, a positive and optimistic mood also matter a lot for kidney transplant patients.
