Fatigue is is a lack of energy and motivation. In normal condition , we feel invigorated as our body can provide us with necessary energy. Red blood cell is an important component of blood and also the basic for us to live normally. The function of red blood cells is to carry oxygen around the body. When our body tissues fail to get enough oxygen, we will feel weakness and tiredness. For kidney failure patients, fatigue usually occurs as a consequence of insufficient of red blood cell.

The production of red blood cell is also known as hematopoiesis and this process occurs in the bone marrow. A hormone called EPO (erythropoietin) plays a crucial role in this process and without enough EPO, production of red blood cell will decrease. Kidney is responsible for secreting this kind of hormone, so when kidneys are injured, production of EPO will decrease and also the account of red blood cell decreases as well. This is the reason why kidney failure patients experience symptom of fatigue.
