Peritoneal Dialysis Treatment for Renal Failure

2013-01-12 16:33

Peritoneal dialysis is one of the major two types of dialysis and the other is hemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis is to make use of the patient’s peritoneum as a semi-permeable membrane. The dialysate will be introduced through a permanent tube in the abdomen under gravity and metabolic wastes, toxins and excessive water and electrolytes will be cleared out of the blood with constant changes of dialysate so as to purify the blood, rectify imbalances of water, electrolytes and acid-base.

Who are suitable groups of peritoneal dialysis?

In case of the following conditions, peritoneal dialysis should be preferred.

Children patients

Elder patients that are above 65

Have cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, cardiac arrhythmia

Once had cerebral hemorrhage or cerebral infarction

Heart failure, hypotension or badly malignant hypertension

Diabetes patients especially companied by fundus lesions or peripheral neuropathy

Repeated fails in fistula

Have obvious bleeding tendency

What are the advantages of peritoneal dialysis?

1. Simple operation and wide application. There is no special equips and patients can do peritoneal dialysis at home without affecting their work. Patients need not to take systemic anticoagulants and there is little heparin being absorbed in abdomen. Therefore it will not increase bleeding risk and it is more suitable for those that have bleeding tendency.

2. Peritoneal dialysis is stable and causes no hemodynamic change since there is no extracorporeal circulation. Dialysis patients can avoid hypotension and imbalance syndrome. Therefore it is more suitable for the elderly especially for those that have cardiovascular diseases.

3. Peritoneal dialysis can protect remaining kidney functions. It has been proved that the decline rate of kidney function in peritoneal dialysis patients is lower than that of hemodialysis patients so as to improve patients’ life quality and extend life expectancy.

4. It has advantages over hemodialysis in clearing moderate-molecular substances, improving anemia and nervous lesions.
