Under What Circumstances is Peritoneal Dialysis is Not Proper

2013-02-08 16:40

Peritoneal dialysis can be applied to all cases of acute and chronic kidney failure, disorders of water and electrolytes as well as heart failure and poisoning. In recent year, it has found that peritoneal dialysis can slow down decline and loss of kidney functions and improve patients’ sexual function and life quality with the continuous development and improvement in dialysis technology and equipment.

Though peritoneal dialysis has wide application and many advantages, there are some conditions and circumstances that peritoneal dialysis can not be operated considering the patients’ safety and effects.

What are the contraindications of peritoneal dialysis?

Peritoneal dialysis has no absolute contraindications, but it is not very proper under the following conditions:

Widely peritoneal adhesion

Abdominal visceral injury

Recent major surgery in abdomen

Colon fistula or fecal fistula

Wide infection or cellulitis in abdominal wall

Diffuse malignant tumor or unknown lesions in abdomen

Diaphragmatic hernia

Serious lung lesions with difficulty in breathing

Pregnancy

Diabetes

What are the disadvantages of peritoneal dialysis?

1. Increase of body weight and triglycerides. Since dialysate uses glucose to remove excessive water and parts of glucose might be absorbed and cause increase of body weight, blood triglycerides and other lipids, therefore patients should take proper exercises and reduce sugar intake.

2. Infections. Since the dialysis tube is connected with the dialysis bag, it has the risk of celiac infections, but at present its risk has been greatly reduced.

3. Loss of proteins. In peritoneal dialysis, there will be loss of protein and vitamins which should be supplies through diets. Besides maintaining the usual eating habits, patients on peritoneal dialysis can have proper supply of fish, meat, egg and milk, etc. As for vitamins, fresh vegetables and fruits are the best resources.

Though peritoneal dialysis have many disadvantages, we should not ignore its advantages. Weather a patient is proper or not for having peritoneal dialysis depends on his specific illness and physical conditions. This is no best therapy, but the most suitable is the best.
