Polycystic Kidney Disease And Renal Failure

2013-02-11 10:39

Renal failure can be caused by a variety of chronic kidney diseases, only each takes long or short time to develop into end stage renal disease. Though polycystic kidney disease is a congenital and hereditary disease, it is chronically progressive and usually it takes relatively longer time to progress into renal failure if left untreated compared with other kidney diseases.

PKD is characterized by several or countless fluid-filled cysts in bilateral kidneys. These renal cysts will greatly enlarge the kidneys, altering renal structure and damaging renal functions. When renal tissues and renal functions are severely damaged, patients will develop renal failure.

When PKD progresses into renal failure, patients can develop complex symptoms including back pain, abdominal mass, blood in urine, hypertension, cyst infection, cyst rupture, urinary tract infections, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, etc.

There is at present no effective cure for renal failure due to PKD because it is caused by gene mutation. The aim of effective treatments for PKD is to prevent and treat complications, slow down illness progression, prevent renal damages and protect residual kidney functions. With proper and timely treatment, the clinical symptoms and complications can be alleviated or controlled, illness conditions can be stabilized, patients’ life quality and life expectancy can be improved.

Hypertension is one common complication of PKD and it is also one important inducement and aggravating factor for speeding up PKD’s progression into renal failure. Therefore it is very important to bring blood pressure well under control.

To prevent developing renal failure, it is very important to have early and effective treatments for PKD. Conventional treatment for renal cysts in PKD are cyst puncture and laparoscopic decortication. Surgeries can remove large cysts in the kidneys so as to much relieve the oppression and symptoms. However, the removal of large renal cysts will provide more chance for small cysts to experience rapid growth and enlargement, therefore patients will have to once again have surgeries which is another trauma to the kidneys.

Compared with surgeries, Chinese medicine is more natural and conservative. Chinese medicines can treat renal inflammations, reduce secretion of cyst fluid so as to shrink renal cysts and prevent cyst spread so as to relieve renal damages and achieve good curative effects.
