The Harms Of Tobacco For Diabetic Kidney Failure

2013-03-28 15:58

tobacco kidney failure diabetesDiabetes is one of the leading cause of chronic kidney failure. For patients that have develop kidney damages after many years’ diabetes, tobacco should be totally avoided because tobacco is harmful to both the blood sugar level and kidney heath.

It has been found that smoking can significantly increase the decline rate of kidney functions and the mortality of diabetic kidney failure patients.

Nicotine in tobacco can damage the central nervous system, inhibiting and paralyzing the nerves. This will worsen peripheral nerve damages in diabetes. Nicotine can also stimulate the secretion of more epinephrine which can further increase blood sugar level and worsen diabetic kidney damages.

Tobacco can also worsen high blood pressure which often co-exist with high blood sugar and kidney damages. Poorly controlled high blood pressure can in turn worsen diabetes and kidney failure and increase the risk of cardiovascular lesions. ACEI drugs are the preferred drug for high blood pressure and slowing down illness progression of diabetic kidney disease. However if the patients are smoker, their kidney functions will experience rapider decline than non-smoker patients even though their blood pressure can be lowered with these drugs.

Nicotine can suddenly increase the coronary blood flow and then gradually reduce. This will affect blood supply to the heart and aggravate myocardial damages.

Besides, tobacco has damages to the digestive system and respiratory tract system. Diabetes and kidney failure often weaken the patients’ immunity and make them more susceptible to upper respiratory infections, pulmonitis and other complications which will severely affect the patients’ life quality and life expectancy.

Even for healthy people, tobacco is not recommended, not to say kidney disease patients. If you are a smoker and now diagnosed with kidney problems, it is highly recommended that tobacco should be avoided as soon as possible.
