Relationship between Kidney Failure and Proteinuria

2013-02-16 08:57

When it comes to the causes of kidney failure, many patients complain it is their proteinuria that brings them kidney failure. Actually, proteinuria is just one of the symptoms of kidney failure and it is not the root causes at all.

Proteinuria refers to the presence of an excess of serum proteins in the urine. The excess protein in urine often causes the urine to become foamy, so proteinuria is also commonly called foamy urine or bubbly urine. Up to 150mg a day of protein may be excreted by a normal person, but these protein can not be detected out through routine urine test. Proteinuria is an abnormal symptom and can be caused by many conditions like urinary tract infection, improper usage of drugs, high blood pressure and so on. Kidney failure is just one of the causes of proteinuria, so not everyone with proteinuria is definitely suffering from kidney problem.

Although proteinuria is not the root cause of kidney failure, bringing proteinuria symptom into control is essential, because proteinuria symptom can worsen kidney function and accelerate kidney disease directly. In cases of kidney failure, protein leak out for glomerular filtration membrane is damaged. Glomerular filtration membrane has filtration function which help to protect protein from being damaged. However, once this membrane is damaged and fails to display filtration function, protein will pass through the membrane and flow out of our body together with urine.

Many kidney failure patients take oral medications to control proteinuria symptom. These medications show quick treatment effects, but they may also found proteinuria relapses again after they stop taking medications for a while. Actually, proteinuria relapses because damaged glomerular filtration membrane is not repaired at all. As long as this membrane is not repaired, protein will leak again and consequently, proteinuria will appear again.

Since we know proteinuria symptom in kidney failure occurs because of decreased filtration function, as long as we repair kidney damages and then improve kidney function, proteinuria problem will be solved fundamentally.
