Kidney is a been-shaped organ with complicated structure. According to the causes and exact location of damages, kidney disease can be divided into different types like Diabetic Nephropathy, Hypertensive Nephropathy, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), Glomerulonephritis, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and so on. Most of the kidney diseases cause no pain in the back, but for some special kidney problems like kidney stone, kidney infection, kidney cyst and PKD, they indeed cause pain in the back:

Kidney stone: kidney stone is the most common cause of pain in the kidney location. Usually, small kidney stones can be discharged easily with urine by drinking much more water and doing some physical exercises. However, if the kidney stone is big enough, they may suck in the kidney and thus cause pain in the back. Aside from kidney, kidney stone also can stuck in ureter which is a slender tubes connecting kidney and bladder.

Kidney infection: kidney infection refers to the inflammation in the kidney. The pain caused by kidney infection can be persistent dull pain and usually antibiotics can be adopted to deal with this problem.

Kidney cyst: kidney cyst causes no pain in back, unless the cyst ruptures or it pulls renal capsule. There are nerves in renal capsule, so when kidney cyst pull or oppress renal capsule, pain in the back will occur.

Polycystic Kidney Disease: Polycystic Kidney Disease is a general kidney problem in which large amounts of cyst grow in the kidney and also enlarge over time. With PKD, patients are at high risk of developing kidney stone, kidney infection and cyst rupture, all of which can cause pain in the back directly. Besides, without effective control, big cysts in kidney rupture easily and PKD runs to kidney failure directly.

Kidney failure is the end result of kidney problem and it can cause pain in the back sometimes. But it is not the only cause for back pain. Without different causes, we need to take different measures to deal with pain in the back, so founding the root cause of pain in the kidney is very essential for patients.
