Gout Due To Kidney Failure

2013-04-03 16:06

kidney failure goutKidney failure can cause high uric acid in blood due to diminished filtration ability and this can lead to gout. Gout can cause patients to have fatigue, joint pain, fever, chill, headache, nausea, uratoma, etc. If left untreated, gout will inturn worsen kidney damages and gout is often accompanied by high blood pressure, high blood lipid, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular lesions.

Healthy kidneys can remove excess uric acid from the blood and when renal functions are impaired uric acid can not be removed and they will accumulate in the blood, resulting in high uric acid and lead to hyperuricemia and gout.

Kidney diseases such as chronic glomerulonephritis, nephropyelitis, polycystic kidney disease, end stage hypertensive kidney disease can all impair glomerular filtration function and cause uric acid accumulation in the blood. When uric acid deposits in the joints it will cause arthritis and joint pain; when uric acid deposits in the kidneys, it will cause stones in the urinary tract.

Kidney transplant patients can also have gout due to long term intake of immunosuppressive agents which might inhibit the discharge of uric acid in the renal tubules.

Gout will in turn worsen kidney damages, therefore early and proper treatment should be sought.

Proper diets can help reduce the production of uric acid and rectify acid-base imbalance. Limit protein intake, have more water intake and avoid alcoholic drinks, have more fresh vegetables, fruits and alkaline foods and limit or avoid high-purine foods such as animal offals, broth, sardines, salmon, etc.

If uric acid in blood is still higher than 9mg/d with diet therapy, some medicines will be used to inhibit the production of uric acid and promote its excretion. Treatment for kidney failure

When renal functions are improved, excess uric acid can be excreted so that high uric acid can be lowered naturally. For relieving the symptoms of gout, Chinese medicines are effective because they can promote blood circulation so as to remove the deposited uric acid in the joints, kidneys and other organs. When these uric acid deposition is removed, the symptoms will be much relieved. Chinese medicines can also help improve kidney functions so as to promote renal filtration system. Uric acid and other wastes such as creatinine, blood urea nitrogen can all be lowered.
