Is Numbness A Sign Of Kidney Failure

2013-04-26 10:50

numbness is a sign of kidney failureBesides the common symptoms of kidney failure including high blood pressure, kidney pain, bubbles in urine, blood in urine, urinary tract infection, swelling, kidney failure patients can experience many other symptoms and signs such as numbness and pains of the fingers, feet and legs, joints, etc.

Numbness in kidney failure patients is mainly due to uremic peripheral neuropathy due to excessive buildup of metabolic wastes and toxins. When kidney failure progresses into the final stage and when GFR falls below 12ml/min, patients will begin to feel numbness, stinging pain, itching. They need to move their legs or have some walk to alleviate these symptoms and discomforts. It is called restless leg syndrome in clinic. It is very common especially at night and it often affect the patient’s sleep quality.

Besides numbness, nervous lesions can also cause burning pains in their legs and feet. They can also have the following symptoms like pupillary asymmetry, facial paralysis, abducent nerve paralysis, hearing impairment, sensorineural deafness, muscle weakness in the throat and tongue, difficulty in urination, reduced urine output, etc.

Another cause of numbness for kidney failure patient is high levels of potassium in the blood. When the kidney functions are severely damaged, excess potassium can not be efficiently removed and cause hyperkalemia. Too much potassium in the body can cause numbness of the fingers, fatigue, weakness, tongue stiffness, choking sensation in the chest, difficulty in expression, loss of consciousness and in serious conditions it can even cause arrhythmia or even sudden stop of heart beat. Therefore it is very important for kidney failure patients to have regular checks of their kidney functions and electrolyte levels so as to have early detection and seek early and proper treatment to prevent irreversible damages and harms to the body. If serum potassium level is high, patients should avoid or at least limit high-potassium foods and if necessary potassium binders will be prescribed.

Doing massage and acupuncture can help greatly relieve numbness and make patients relaxed and comfortable. Treating kidney failure, relieving symptoms, controlling complications, rectifying metabolic disorders and electrolyte imbalances, repairing damaged tissues and organs can help relieve numbness from the root.
