How to Alleviate Fatigue due to Kidney Disease

2012-12-31 14:22

fatigueKidney disease will cause a series of discomforts and symptoms including fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, skin itching, poor sleep and acute heart failure, etc.

Why kidney disease will cause you feel fatigue?

Kidney disease patients especially those that have developed renal failure have a lot of metabolic wastes and toxins accumulating in their body. This will disturb their internal environment and cause poor appetite, nausea and vomiting. Besides, there are some special diet restrictions for kidney disease patients---low-protein, low-fat, low-potassium and low-phosphorus and if there is not adequate calorie intake, patients will always feel weak and fatigue and have general illness feeling.

Another reason of fatigue is anemia which is very common among end stage renal disease. Malnutrition, lack of iron intake, bleeding tendency, reduced secretion of erythropoietin lead to inadequate blood and oxygen supply to the cells and this will cause fatigue.

How to alleviate fatigue?

1. Consult the nephrologist and dietitian for reasonable daily diets and nutritions according to your specific illness and physical conditions. Proper diets can help ensure necessary and adequate nutrition and at the same time avoiding increase kidney burdens and help consolidate the curative effects of the treatments.

2. Have regular checks and pay more attention to your red blood cell count and in case of anemia, seek proper medicines and diet therapy.

3. External application of Chinese medicines can help promote blood circulation and eliminate blood clots and stasis so as to increase blood and oxygen supply to the cells and body and make patients feel more energetic. Herbal medicines can also help preserve residual kidney functions and repair damaged renal intrinsic cells and tissues and recover certain renal functions.

Besides, patients should avoid strenuous activities and over-tiredness and have adequate good rest. Proper and regular physical exercises such as walking, jogging, cycling and tai chi can also help build up physical strength and alleviate fatigue.
