Drugs Should Be Used For Patients With Kidney Failure

2013-02-05 14:42

medicinesKidney is our body’ s natural filtration system which helps discharge metabolic wastes and clear the internal environment. Kidney failure patients will develop a series of symptoms such as renal anemia, high blood pressure, headache, edema, skin itching, bone problems, urinary changes like bubbles in urine, blood in urine, frequent urination, etc.

To help alleviate these symptoms and discomforts so as to improve patients’ life quality and slow progression of renal failure, patients need to have some medicines.

Antihypertensive drugs

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one common symptom of renal failure due to retention of water, sodium and wastes as well as activation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Hypertension, if left untreated can cause headache, dizziness and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and speed up decline rate of kidney functions. Commonly prescribed antihypertensive drugs include ACEI, ARB, beta blocker, calcium antagonists, etc.

Renal failure patients often have edema due to water and sodium retention. They often have swelling or puffiness around their eyes, hands, feet and arms and in serious conditions will have pleural effusion. And for those that are on dialysis, gaining too much weight due to edema will add difficulty to the next dialysis, therefore diuretic drugs are very necessary. It can also help control high blood pressure. Common diuretics include frusemide, bumetanide, etc. Besides, there are many herbal medicines that have effective and natural diuretics functions such as dandelion root, corn silk, etc.

Since kidneys have the function of producing erythropoetin, kidney failure patients often suffer from renal anemia and fatigue, hence EPO is often prescribed.

Phosphorus binders

Kidney failure patients often have electrolyte disorders such as imbalances of potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, magnesium, etc. Excessive phosphorus accumulation in the body can cause skin itching and bone problems. Therefore renal failure patients with high level blood phosphorus should have some phosphorus binders besides diet limitation of high-phosphorus foods.

Besides, iron supplement and vitamins will also be prescribed according to patients’ illness conditions. Take regular medicines according to the doctor’s order.
