How To Treat Metabolic Acidosis Caused By Kidney Failure

2013-02-20 12:05

Healthy kidneys have the functions of keeping acid-base balances, in case of renal diseases, this balance will be disturbed. When GFR falls below 10-15ml/min and more than 70%-90% kidney functions are damaged, the normal metabolism, water, electrolytes and acid-base balance can not be maintained, patients will develop a series of disequilibrium such as high creatinine, high urea, metabolic acidosis, retention of water and sodium, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, difficulty in concentration, etc.

Metabolic acidosis develops when damaged kidneys can not discharge acidic materials from the blood and it is one of the most common cause of death for renal failure patients. In case of metabolic acidosis, patients can have the following symptoms.

·Digestive tract symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite

·Worsen renal anemia

·Speed up renal osteopathy and secondary hyperparathyroidism

·Weaken myocardial contraction and aggravate cardiac dysfunction

·Worsen nervous lesions and uremic encephathy

·Promote protein decomposition and worsen accumulation of nitrogenous wastes

·Cause and worsen high blood potassium

Since metabolic acidosis will bring a lot of harms to the body and will worsen renal failure, early diagnosis and timely treatment are important.

The following are some medicines for alleviating metabolic acidosis.

Baking soda---it can be given in some conditions to improve the acidity of the blood.

THAM (tromethamine)---it can limit the production of CO2 and can be used to treat severe metabolic acidosis.

NaHCO3---it is preferred for chronic metabolic acidosis.

To treat metabolic acidosis, effective treatment should achieve the following curative effects---the primary illness of metabolic acidosis is treated, disorders of water and electrolytes are rectified and blood circulation and effective circulating blood volume are recovered and kidney functions are improved.

At last I want to say that alcohol and some medicines that are taking by renal failure patients might be the cause of metabolic acidosis such as aspirin, salicylates, therefore if you are taking these medicines for long time, you need to talk with the doctor and change for another ones.
