Drugs And Medicines For Kidney Failure

medicinesKidney failure patients will develop a series of symptoms and complications due to loss of part or even all kidney functions. Some medicines and drugs will be prescribed to help control symptoms, reduce complications and slow down illness progression so as to make patients feel more comfortable and improve their life quality.

Medicines for kidney failure with high blood pressure

High blood pressure will worsen kidney failure if not effectively controlled. Commonly prescribed antihypertensive drugs include angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI),angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), beta-blocker, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, vasodilators, etc. Often more than one medicines will be used together to control high blood pressure.

Kidney failure with diabetes

Diabetes is one major cause of kidney failure, therefore hypoglycemic drugs will be necessary to control high blood glucose and prevent further deterioration of kidney damages.

Other medicines that kidney failure patients may need are as follows:

Diuretics is used to alleviate fluid retention in the patient’s body. Due to loss of kidney function, excessive water can not be discharged efficiently and they will stay in the body and cause swelling in arms, legs, hands, feet, etc. Fluid overload can also worsen high blood pressure. Drugs called diuretics can remove these excessive water out of the body.

Statins are used to lower cholesterol level so as to much lower the risk of developing heart disease and other cardiovascular complications.

Erythropoietin and iron supplement will be prescribed to treat renal anemia and improve red blood cell count in the body. When anemia is relieved, fatigue, tiredness, cold feeling will all be improved.

Some kidney failure patients may also need calcium and vitamin D supplement to strengthen their bones and prevent fracture and other bone problems.

For end stage kidney failure patients that are on dialysis, they may need to have medicines such as erythropoietin, iron agents, vitamin D supplement to help alleviate side effects and complications of dialysis.

Note: improper intake or overuse of some drugs and medicines can cause or worsen kidney failure. These medicines include antibiotics, ACEI, ARB, anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc, therefore it is very important to take medicines under the doctor’a guidance.
