What Are The Possible Treatments For Kidney Failure

2013-03-28 09:50

Kidney failure can be divided into 5 stages according to the severity of renal damages and the residual kidney functions. In the early stage of kidney failure, it can be recovered with timely and proper treatments. For those that have developed advanced renal damages, the goal of treatment is to prevent further deterioration and delay its progression into complete renal failure.

The following are possible treatments for kidney failure patients. Some of these treatments might be offered by your doctor according to your illness conditions.

Diet and lifestyle adjustments

Renal failure often cause high creatinine and high BUN which means there are excessive uremic wastes in the patient’s blood due to declined renal filtration ability. Therefore patients need to have protein-restricted diets to reduce waste products in the blood and relieve burdens to the kidneys. Low-salt, low-fat is also necessary to help control high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and relieve swelling.

Besides, some unhealthy life habits such as smoking, drinking, staying up, over-tiredness should all be avoided.

Medicines and drugs

Kidney failure can cause a series of symptoms and complications which often need to be treated with corresponding drugs and medicines to alleviate discomforts and stabilize illness conditions. High blood pressure medicines as well as those that help to lower cholesterol, relieve anemia, swelling and strengthen the bones should be taken.

Dialysis and kidney transplant

For those that have developed into end stage renal failure, dialysis or kidney transplant is needed to sustain the patient’s life. Without any treatment, patients on this stage will die within several days or several weeks.

Immunotherapy might be a good choice for those that refuse to be put on dialysis and those that have no chance to have kidney transplant. It is the combination of Chinese therapy and western therapy which aims at repairing damaged renal tissues and recovering kidney functions so as to prevent further illness progression and avoid dialysis or kidney transplant. In some cases if the patients are in critical illness conditions such as pulmonary edema or heart failure that can not be controlled with medicines, dialysis is still needed, but patients will not become dependent on dialysis and they need not to worry about the side effects of long term dialysis.
