Blood Transfusion For Kidney Failure

2013-04-19 15:50

Many chronic kidney failure will suffer from anemia, some are mild and some can be very serious or even threaten the patient’s life. In most cases, renal anemia does not require blood transfusion unless it is acute hemorrhage or serious enough to threaten the patient’s life.

There are mainly two reasons why kidney failure cause anemia. One is reduced secretion of erythropoietin by the impaired kidneys and the other is malnutrition or frequent hemorrhages.

Kidney failure can cause a series of health problems such as anemia, hypoalbuminemia. In case of serious illness conditions, patients need to have intravenous transfusion of albumin and blood. It can not only help alleviate renal anemia, increase protein levels in the blood, but also can help treat swelling, heart failure, etc.

Normal haemoglobin for adult male is 120-160 and for female it is 110-150. For children it is 110-160. Usually when haemoglobin is below 60g/L, blood transfusion will be considered. If anemia is not that serious, there is no need to do blood transfusion because blood transfusion has certain risks. What is more, blood transfusion can cause the patient’s body to produce many antibodies which will increase the incidence of organ rejection if the patient wants to do kidney transplant.

There are other alternative treatment for renal anemia. EPO (erythropoietin) has been proved in clinic to be effective at treating anemia due to kidney failure. It can help increase red blood cell counts, ease fatigue, cold feeling, lethargy and other sick feelings. Patient’s appetite, mental conditions will all be improved and other symptoms of kidney failure will reduce. EPO can cause some side effects to the patients such as high blood pressure.

At the same time of receiving EPO treatment, patients need to have proper iron supplement through oral intake or intravenous injection. Proper diet can also help increase iron supply to the body.

Chinese medicines can treat renal anemia and help patients avoid blood transfusion. Chinese medicines can help eliminate blood clots and qi stagnation, promote blood circulation. It can also ease uremic state in the body so as to prolong the life span of red blood cells. What is more, important, it can help improve kidney functions so that more erythropoietin will be produced and renal anemia will be treated from the root.
