Cortisone For Kidney Failure

2013-04-27 11:36

Cortisone For Kidney FailureCortisone belongs to a class of adrenal cortical steroid drugs and it is mainly used to treat adrenocortical hypofunction and pituitary function impairment. It is also widely used to treat kidney disease and kidney failure.

Cortisone has the similar curative effects as that of prednisone, but it is not as effective as prednisone. It has been proved that cortisone has good effects on treating certain types of kidney disease such as IgA nephropathy which is renal damages due to deposition of immune complexes in renal mesangial areas. Cortisone takes effects by treating inflammations in the kidneys so as to prevent further renal damages and much relieve symptoms such as swelling, proteinuria, hematuria, high blood pressure, etc.

Cortisone can be taken orally or it can be taken through intramuscular injection. Though cortisone has quick and obvious effects to relieve kidney disease symptoms, it can not cure the disease and usually patients need to have the drug for long time. Symptoms often reappear and patients often will develop discomforts such as headache, fatigue, abdominal pain or back pain, low fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite after cortisone is stopped.

That are the side effects of steroids, therefore patients should not solely rely on cortisone and other steroid drugs. While taking cortisone, it is very important to follow the doctor’s prescriptions to avoid irregular intake or misuse. It has been reported that over using of high dosage of cortisone can cause acute renal failure or worsen already existing renal problems.

Some kidney disease patients may find that their serum creatinine is further elevated or they develop acute renal failure shortly after taking cortisone. This is possible, therefore more natural and safe medicines and treatments are needed especially for the elderly patients. Chinese medicines in this regard are good choice because most Chinese medicines are natural and cause no side effects or injuries to the body when they are taken under the doctor’s guidance. Though it takes relatively long time to have obvious curative effects compared with cortisone, there are many types of Chinese medicines to choose to deal with each symptom of kidney disease. What is more, Chinese medicines can help improve kidney functions so it is much more effective from the long run.
